All Set for the Nationwide Free WiFi Hotspot Program!!

Free Public WiFi

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through its Information and Communications Technology office, is ready for the implementation of the nationwide free public WiFi hotspot program starting July where it will be mostly focusing on low income municipalities in the Philippines that cannot be reached by the telcos' network coverage.

With a budget of P1.4 billion, these WiFi hotspots will be installed in many selected public places all over the country which include plazas, community parks, school grounds, government hospitals, bus terminals, sea ports, and local government offices to name a few. Each user who will use WiFi in these said places will be provided with a maximum speed of 256 kbps and a data cap of 1 GB. These will ensure that the service will be enjoyed fairly by everyone and will not undermine the commercially available services offered by telecommunications companies.

Although the speed provided in this project is not as fast as that of Smart and Globe, this will be ideal for light and casual Internet activities such as social media posting and web browsing. The project's implementation is expected to be complete by November 2015.
