Digital Television Closely Within our Reach
For years, millions of Filipino viewers have experienced poor signal reception and sometimes bad picture quality on their television sets using an antenna. Many of them could not afford to subscribe to any pay TV service available that is being offered to them regardless of lower monthly costs. This is why the Philippine government is investing heavily on the country's transition from old analog to digital terrestrial television, which will become fully implemented soon using Japanese technology simply known as ISDB-T.
Digital terrestrial television broadcasts using ISDB-T will provide better signal quality, allow mobile subscribers to watch their favorite TV shows clearly and on-the-go on their mobile devices, and enable the broadcast of warnings that would alert the viewing public of impending calamities and ongoing emergency situations. Although there is no definite date for when analog TV broadcasts in the country will be permanently shut off, the transition would make our old analog TV sets become obsolete unless either if our tube is capable of receiving digital TV broadcasts or we can purchase a digibox that can do so for a very affordable price.
Many television stations in the Philippines are still testing their own digital broadcasts until now, while TV manufacturers and even mobile phone brands are starting to offer their own brand of digital TV capable products to Filipino consumers that can comply to the standards set by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) which were released in December 2014. With these continuing efforts made by the government and the television industry, it will only be a matter of time before more Filipinos will begin to experience a better, clearer and more enjoyable way of watching their favorite TV shows at home.
